Software
This page has a selection of software that may be of general interest. Most of the items are fairly unusual.
The majority are freeware.
With some, in order to encourage continued development or because I have incurred some expenses, a donation would be appreciated.
Others are commercial products the price of which can only be known after consultation. The price is usually dependent on the amount of customisation required.
Regardless of whether a program is free or not, whether you will wish to register or not, I would appreciate some feedback on a program's usefulness after you have been using it for a little while. This will give me some indication of the number of users, the program's usefulness and it will help define ideas for other programs. This will not result in any correspondence unless you explicitly request particular information.
Possible problems
The majority of these programs require something called a Windows run-time module. You should try to run the program first as there is a good chance that the run-time modules are already installed in your machine since they are used by a variety of other programs. With the newer operating systems, post Win98, the likelihood is that the requirement is already incorporated within the operating system.
If the program does not run, download (from a reputable site such as the Microsoft one) a file called VBRUN60.EXE. VBRUN60.EXE is also often found on the cover disc of various computing magazines.
Run that file, re-start your machine, and try the Erio program that you downloaded again.
If you have the knowledge to do a manual installation do note that the only required run-time file is Msvbvm60.dll
Some of these programs may also require the installation of what Microsoft calls 'ActiveX components'. These have to be installed (registered) within the operating system. With any software, I do not supply an install routine because I would much rather you be aware of what is being installed where, rather than running an automatic installation script which leaves you wondering what changes have happened to your machine.
The registering of an ActiveX component requires running a program call 'Regsvr32.exe' (the required full line will be given in the instructions for the Erio program that you have downloaded). At least, that is true for Win98 and possibly XP.
However by the time Vista came along, the security was improved so that the installation of ActiveX components became more difficult. The reason is that, if someone wants to do real nasties to your machine (or using your machine), one of the easiest things would be to install an ActiveX component in it, often disguised as something innocuous.
It is of course, commendable of Microsoft to add this layer of security. What is not commendable is that when you deliberately need to install such a file, the procedure can be quite convoluted and often fails!
If you have problems try the procedures I have described here. They are based on the many pages on the Internet that discuss ActiveX component registration. Be careful out there! The quality of information on this subject is extremely variable!
At the moment the only program from Erio Services that requires an ActiveX component is Erio-WA but only if you are a registered user.
